In his new album, “Éxodo,” Peso Pluma reflects on his journey before and after rising to fame. The young Mexican-American Grammy winner proudly embraces his role in expanding the global reach of música Mexicana, but he also grapples with the weight of that responsibility. The album explores darker themes compared to his 2023 Billboard chart-topping debut, “Génesis.” In “Hollywood,” for instance, he sings, “I live a fast-paced lifestyle / The life of an artist / Drugs and women,” showcasing the stark realities of his life.

“‘Éxodo’ is very different from ‘Génesis,’” Peso told Variety in a video interview. “I think I’ve matured in my vocals and learned from every artist I collaborate with. I try to incorporate those lessons into my music.”

Peso Pluma enlisted a diverse range of collaborators for “Éxodo,” spanning the genre landscape. The album features Quavo rapping in Spanish on “Pa No Pensar” and Cardi B delivering verses on the trumpet-led “Put Em in the Fridge,” along with Mexican stars like Kenia Os and Natanael Cano.

“‘Hollywood’ was written by [featured artist] Estevan Plazola, who I’ve known since we were 18,” Peso explained. “The lyrics reflect our reality—how we’ve navigated fame, wealth, and achieving our childhood dreams.”

To bring “Éxodo” to life, Peso worked with producer Ernesto Fernandez, a 2023 Variety Hitmaker honoree who also produced much of “Génesis.” Their experimentation solidified the first half of “Éxodo,” which features the Mexican corrido music that established Peso’s career.

“If you’re used to hearing my Mexican songs, you’ll notice I always use tololoche,” Peso said. “In [‘Solicitado’], we replaced it with an electric bass, which true fans of these instruments will appreciate.”

These distinctive bass notes are what Peso proudly calls his “trademark sound.” He recalls, “This sound emerged while vibing in the studio with [Ernesto] as we worked on ‘Rosa Pastel’ from ‘Génesis.’ We played with different effects and created this unique sound, and from there, everyone wanted to emulate it.”

On “Ice,” Peso draws from his youth, particularly his love for WWE, incorporating a sound bite of Ric Flair. Sweet guitar melodies introduce delicately layered vocals that build to elongated high notes. It was one of the last songs added to the 24-song double LP.

“Ric Flair was a big inspiration for me growing up,” Peso said. “I admired his style and luxury. I included him in the song because it’s about that lifestyle. Everyone tries to copy it, but no matter how much they do, they’ll never be Peso Pluma.”

Peso Pluma delves into the creation of his latest album, ‘Éxodo,’ and shares the surprising influence behind the track ‘Ice’—none other than wrestling legend Ric Flair. In an exclusive breakdown, Peso Pluma discusses the stories and inspirations behind each song on the album, giving fans a deeper insight into his creative process and the unique elements that shaped his music.

FILE - Actor Taylor Wily, also known as Teila Tuli, gestures to fans after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before a baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers in Seattle on June 14, 2014. Wily, an actor known for his roles on “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I,” has died at 56.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Taylor Wily, a former sumo wrestler turned actor, known for his role as confidential informant Kamekona Tupuola on “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I,” has passed away at the age of 56. His death was confirmed Friday by his friend and “Hawaii Five-0” producer, Peter M. Lenkov.

Lenkov confirmed Wily’s passing to The Associated Press and shared heartfelt tributes on Instagram, including a photo captioned, “I am devastated. Heartbroken.”

Honolulu-based KITV 4 first reported Wily’s death on Thursday, though the cause remains undisclosed. TV and radio personality Lina Girl Langi expressed her sorrow on the show “Island Life Live,” announcing the news “with a heavy heart” as Wily was a close friend.

Lenkov, who had a long-standing friendship and professional relationship with Wily, posted a video montage of photos and clips on Thursday, writing, “You charmed me into making you a regular… on the show… and in my life. You were family. And I will miss you every day, brother.”

In a statement to the AP, Lenkov praised Wily’s versatility, highlighting his talent in both comedic and dramatic roles. “Despite the fact that a lot of his ‘Hawaii Five-0’ and ‘Magnum’ scenes featured his comedy skills, he was an incredible dramatic actor, as well,” Lenkov said. He also revealed plans to include Wily in a future project, expressing deep regret that this opportunity is now lost.

Wily portrayed Kamekona on “Hawaii Five-0” from 2010 to 2020, becoming a beloved character. He continued the role in the “Magnum P.I.” reboot and made a memorable appearance as a hotel worker in the 2008 comedy “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”

Born Teila Tuli, Wily had a notable career before acting as a sumo wrestler and UFC 1 fighter. He gained attention in 1993 when Gerard Gordeau knocked out his tooth with a kick, marking the first knockout in UFC history.

Wily is survived by his wife, Halona, and their two children.

"Taylor Wily, beloved for his roles in 'Hawaii Five-0' and as a former UFC fighter, passes away at 56."

For those just discovering pop singer Chappell Roan, her rapid rise may seem like overnight success—but as she shared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on June 20, that's far from the truth for fans who've cherished her debut album, "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess," since its 2023 release. Describing a photo of herself alone at a keyboard on a small stage, Roan recounted her days working at a doughnut shop with little money.

Roan's Tonight Show debut followed her recent performance at Governor's Ball, where she captivated a large audience. Following a lively interview with Fallon, she enchanted the crowd with a whimsical performance of her new single, "Good Luck, Babe!"

When Fallon asked her how it felt to suddenly become a pop star, Roan quipped, "It feels like I've been right all along. I mean, it already felt like I made it when people showed up to my concert a few years ago. I was like, 'people came?!' Everything else has just been the cherry on top."

Roan's rendition of "Good Luck, Babe!" was a delightful treat for the audience.

During her chat with Fallon, Roan reflected on an inspiring moment from Coachella, where she proclaimed, "'I'm Chappell Roan, and I'm your favorite artists' favorite artist," inspired by Sasha Colby, a celebrated drag performer known for saying, "I'm your favorite drag queens' favorite drag queen."

"That really resonated with me," Roan shared. "I hope Sasha Colby watches me one day—that's why I said it."

Roan's wish came true when Colby shared the Tonight Show clip on her Instagram stories shortly after.

For Roan's performance of "Good Luck, Babe!" on June 10, she brought her vocal prowess to Studio 6B adorned in feathers from head to nails.

"We draw inspiration from drag, horror movies, burlesque, and theater," Roan told Fallon about her eclectic style choices with stylist Genesis Webb. "I love looking pretty and scary, or even just not pretty! I embrace it all."

Her stage setup featured a fantastical theme, with Roan singing before a majestic swan throne—a true fairy tale moment.

Rewrite: Chappell Roan, hailed as a favorite among artists, graced The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night with her presence. In celebration of the occasion, she arrived exquisitely adorned in extreme beauty.

"Your on-stage looks are iconic," Fallon remarked during their interview, unveiling a montage of Roan's appearances, including her striking portrayal as the Statue of Liberty at the Governor's Ball.

"Genesis Webb, my stylist, and I draw inspiration from drag, horror films, burlesque, and theater—I love blending beauty with a touch of darkness," Roan disclosed. For her Tonight Show appearance, she drew inspiration from the 2003 film Barbie of Swan Lake. With the help of hairstylist Dom Forletta, her trademark red curls were transformed into a bleach blonde mane, complemented by blocked eyebrows and feather accents expertly placed by makeup artist Andrew Dahling to enhance her eyes. Throughout the show, she donned two distinct feathered outfits, embodying both White Swan queen Odette and Black Swan Odile.

"The blonde hair truly amplified the ethereal swan aesthetic we aimed for," Forletta revealed exclusively. "Yes, it's a wig! We used extensions to match the fullness of Chappell's natural hair." Achieving her signature curls involved using the ghd Thin Curling Wand and classic figure 8 waves secured with hairpins. R&Co's Balloon Dry Volume Spray provided the finishing touch for her voluminous hairstyle.

During the interview, Roan casually chewed gum and showcased her nails, designed by Juan Alvear, which resembled 6-inch talons. "Each nail mimics the quill of a feather," Alvear explained. "I used Artic Jelly and Buttercup Jelly from Essie, creating a gradient from opaque to translucent with striation detailing. Ostrich feathers were added for movement and stage presence, ensuring they were as dynamic as Chappell herself."

In a candid moment with Fallon, the singer shared a personal revelation that resonated with fans who followed her Coachella interview: if not pursuing music, she envisioned a career in esthetics. With her intriguing beauty regimen, perhaps a future segment on Beauty Secrets awaits.
